Sapphire wedding bands are becoming increasingly popular.
Far from being untraditional, the sapphire has long symbolized faithfulness
and sincerity, making a sapphire
wedding ring the perfect choice for your wedding or commitment
ceremony. And, with the increase in popularity of white metals,
sapphires make a particularly striking choice. The contrast between
the blue cornflower gemstone, the sparkle of diamonds, and a white
gold or platinum setting will ensure your sapphire
wedding band will be cherished for many generations.
The finest sapphires were once considered to come from Burma
and Kashmir. Today, those sources yield a very limited quantity of sapphire.
Much of the sapphire wedding rings sold on today's market comes from gemstones found in
Sri Lanka, Thailand and Cambodia.
Another appealing characteristic of sapphire wedding bands are
their durability. Sapphires are second only to diamonds as the hardest mineral
known to humankind. Unlike most rings that are kept in jewelry boxes and worn
on special occasions, wedding bands are often worn day in and day out. This
makes a sapphire wedding ring set in platinum very appealing.
Moh's scale of hardness classifies corundum, and subsequently
sapphire, as having a hardness of 9. It should be noted that even though this
is the second hardest mineral next to the diamond, it is only 1/140th as hard as
a diamond. Conversely, it is seven times as hard
as Topaz, number 8 on the list. Sapphire wedding bands are not only durable,
they may be steam and ultrasonic cleaned. As with all
gemstones, care should be taken against direct blows since they may crack the
stones in your sapphire ring.
